2022-2023 Executive Board

President

Solome Abebe is the PTSA President for the 2022-2023 school year. 

​

Solome is the mother of 2 children, a current Parkland 8th grader and a former Parkland MMS student, who is now a Junior and IB Diploma candidate at Springbrook HS. Solome has a BA from the Johns Hopkins University and an MS from Georgetown University, and is a former Scinentific Researcher. A major motivation for Solome getiing involved with the PTSA is to make sure that Parkland is a school where students are happy and see learning as fun. She hopes to make Parkland PTSA a resource for connecting parents, organizing enrichment activities for students, and a supporter of teachers.

Position Descriptions

President

- Preside at all PTSA, Board of Directors and Executive Committee meetings

- Coordinate work of the officers and committees

- Be an ex officio member of all committees, except nominating committee

- Review and initial monthly bank statements

- Represent PTSA at council meetings, or send representative

- Perform other duties, as necessary or assigned by the board of directors

- Meet with Parkland Principal at the beginning of the year to discuss shared goals and hopes

- Update website forms

- Plan programming and fundraising activities; delegate

Secretary
  • Record minutes of the General Membership and Board of Directors meetings

  • Send out emails, updates and reminders from the PTSA to membership about meetings and special events

  • Create sign up, surveys, and flyers as needed; distribute around school

  • Help with keeping website current

  • Read records of previous meetings, if needed

  • File all records

  • Have a copy of the bylaws in Free State PTA template

  • Maintain a current membership list

  • Perform other duties, as necessary or assigned by the board of directors

  • Work to improve/ expand communication to membership and larger school community; may need to use new tools & strategies 

Treasurer
  • Have custody of all PTSA funds

  • Keep a full and accurate account of receipts and expenditures, including reconciliation of monthly bank statements

  • With President, creates a budget for the PTSA which is distributed to membership for approval

  • Make disbursements as authorized by the president or board of directors, in accordance with the adopted budget

  • Present a written financial statement at all general body, board of directors and executive committee meetings, and at other times, upon request of the board of directors

  • Make a full report before newly elected officers assume their positions

  • Maintain accounting books and records

  • Prepare and file all necessary tax forms, submitting a copy to MD PTSA within 30 days of filing

  • Oversee audit at the end of the school year

  • Pay membership dues

  • Perform other duties, as necessary or assigned by the board of directors

Events Chairperson
  • Recruit a team of volunteers to help with PTSA-led events

  • Create a plan of action, timeline, and budget for PTSA initiatives and new student-chosen events

  • Work with other chairs when necessary

  • Organize and execute events; advertise

NAACP Liaison
  • Attend local NAACP Parents' Council meetings

  • Identify potential diversity issues within the school

  • Promote parent engagement, espeically within the minority community

  • Share with Parkland MMS resources provided by the NAACP and available to students

  • Conduct a preliminary meeting in the fall, in conjunction with MCPS and NCAACP Parents' Coalition, to discuss potential areas of improvement

  • Conduct a follow-up meeting to highlight results of preliminary meeting and actions taken toward resolution of the issues

 

**VP Fundraising
  • Help the PTSA meet its budget needs by raising funds through various endeavors

  • Contact local businesses to sponsor fundraising events or to provide donations

  • Sell spirit wear at Parkland events and solicit booster donations/ direct funding from families

  • Brainstorm and plan new fundraising initiatives

  • Work with Treasurer to keep track of fundraising goals and income generated

MCCPTA Delegates (2)
  • Represent Parkland Magnet Middle School at council meetings, voting on issues as necessary

  • Take notes on council meetings and report back to the board of directors and general body monthly

  • Advocate for Parkland and express what Parkland needs to MCCPTA. Report what is working well at Parkland and share with Parkland families additional information they can benefit from

  • Perform other duties, as necessary or assigned by the board of directors

  • Solicit membership in the PTSA amongst the parents, students, and faculty of the school, as well as community members

  • Ensure appropriate payment is received from each member

  • Conduct membership drives to boost membership; Recruit parents and students to become members using creative ideas we can all help implement

  • Maintain a current database of members

  • Work with treasurer to ensure necessary dues have been paid to the county and state

  • Provide monthly update on membership

  • Perform other duties, as necessary or assigned by the board of directors
